Jeremy Steele scored his third CRUSA 604 Series victory of the season.
What won the race: Fighting off challenges from Austin Yarbrough and regaining control for good on lap 42, polesitter Jeremy Steele of York, S.C., led all but five laps in winning Saturday's $10,000 21st annual Governor's Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Steele beat Randall Beckwith by 2.169 seconds for his third Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA 604 Series victory and fourth overall feature win of the season.
Quotable: “This place is awesome, probably one of the better racetracks I’ve ever been to. This is probably the hardest race I’ve ever won,” Steele said. “I told my dad that we go to all these one-lane racetracks and qualify 15th, be lucky to run 12th, and we come to one of the best facilities in the country and you’re gonna start on the pole and it’s the hardest thing to do, to lead 75 (laps). I’m just glad we got it.”
Key notes: Steele extended his series points lead, adding to tour victories on May 3 at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway and Aug. 16 at Senoia (Ga.) Raceway. ... He also topped an American Crate All-Star Series field Aug. 30 at Natural Bridge (Va.) Speedway, boosting his total winnings to more than $28,000 on the season. ... Austin Yarbrough charged from 15th to lead laps 37-41 before Steele slipped back by him with an inside move out of turn two on the 42nd circuit. Yarbourgh remained within striking distance until slowing and trailing heavy smoke on lap 53, triggering the race's fifth and final yellow flag; he was credited with 16th. ... Tenth-starting Randall Beckwith grabbed second on the lap-53 restart and pulled within a second of Steele in the closing laps, but never truly challenged. ... Joseph Brown took third from Corey Neil Jr. on lap 55 and rounded out the podium finishers; Neil held fourth until Nick Thrash passed him on the 67th lap, relegating Neil to fifth. ... Chris McElhenney overcame lap-19 and lap-23 incidents to finish 12th. ... The lap-23 caution flew when 12th-running Jamey Boland nearly spun out of turn four, sending Matt Henderson spinning to avoid contact, collecting McElhenney and Monte Skinner. ... The lap-19 caution involved Deisel Jones and eliminated Josh Ray; Jones continued until lap 39 when he pulled off as he was about to be lapped. ... The opening stoppage came on lap 14 when Jamie Elam spun and backed into the turn-two wall. ... The 75-lapper lasted 39 minutes with 10 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Josh Parkerson of Millspring, Miss., started 17th and finished sixth; Koulten Herbert of Locust Grove, Ga., started 19th and finished eighth.
