A bottle of milk hits the spot for Bobby Pierce.
What won the race: Clearing early leader Drake Troutman with a turn-three slide job and fighting off attempted crossover move on the 19th lap, fourth-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., led the rest of Thursday's 30-lap Dairyland Showdown opener at Mississippi Thunder Speedway. Pierce beat Troutman by 1.340 seconds for the $10,000 payday, his third straight World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory and seventh of the season.
Quotable: “It had me worried, being the tire we were on, to run the top. It can be a little crumby up there, but hidden under that crumb was a little bit of traction, I guess, from the water they put down,” Pierce said. “They’d kinda go down to the bottom and have to get the car pinched off a little bit and I just kept that momentum up there and started getting some good runs. But, it was challenging, I feel like I could’ve ended up first, I could’ve ended up fifth, or worse.”
Key notes: Pierce notched his 49th career full-field World of Outlaws victory, breaking a tie with Shane Clanton for fourth on the tour's all-time list. ... It's Pierce's second win of the week, adding to Tuesday's $12,000 payday after his repeat victory at Independence (Iowa) Motor Speedway. ... Drake Troutman led the opening 18 laps from the pole before settling for second. ... Ryan Gustin briefly held second on the 13th lap following a three-wide battle with Pierce and Tim McCreadie; Gustin nipped Nick Hoffman by 0.154 of a second to finish third while McCreadie slipped to fifth. ... Brent Larson improved six positions to place 20th aboard his backup car after earlier trouble in heat race action. ... The race was slowed by one caution when Chris Simpson failed to fire on the opening start, causing a bottleneck on the frontstretch that sent Daulton Wilson spinning into the infield; Wilson continued to finish 22nd while Simpson retired and was scored 26th as the only starter who failed to finish. ... The 30-lapper lasted just shy of 11 minutes with 18 starters completing the distance. ... Jonathan Davenport came up two spots shy of making the feature after resorting to a backup car following heavy turn-three wall contact on the opening lap of the first heat race, damaging his right-rear quarterpanel, spoiler and deck.
On the move: Cade Dillard of Robeline, La., started 14th and finished ninth.

Heat race recap

Tim McCreadie overcame an early restart and led all 10 laps in winning the night’s first heat race by 0.653 of a second over third-starting Nick Hoffman. Sammy Mars held off Justin Duty to finish third, as both drivers will join McCreadie and Hoffman in the 30-lap main event. The first caution came for Jonathan Davenport’s heavy contact with the turn-three wall, ripping his right-rear quarter panel, spoiler and decking out; Davenport retired and was credited with 10th. … Drake Troutman earned a flag-to-flag victory in winning the second heat by 2.370 seconds over Trey Mills, who trailed Troutman all 10 laps. Fifth-starting Tyler Erb used a last-lap pass by Chris Simpson to take third, with both drivers clinching spots in the $10,000-to-win Dairyland Showdown opener. … Second-starting Ryan Gustin fired off from the outside front row and led the entire distance of the third heat, winning by 1.792 seconds over Michael Leach, who narrowly edged Ethan Dotson by 0.023 of a second to finish runner up. Dotson settled for third while fifth-starting Cade Dillard rounded out the top-four finishers. … Bobby Pierce dominated the fourth and final heat race, leading all 10 laps and taking the checkers by 2.040 seconds ahead of Dustin Sorensen. Sorensen nearly pinched Dylan Thornton into the turn-two wall on a lap-four restart, allowing Jake Timm to finish third, relegating Thornton to fourth. The night’s second yellow flag flew on the fourth lap when Tim Isenberg clipped an infield tire and spun in turn two; he continued to finish 10th.
