Ashton Winger celebrates at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Slipping inside early leader Zack Mitchell at the entrance of turn three on the 10th lap, fourth-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led the rest of Friday's 40-lap Ollie's Clash at the Mag prelim at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Winger won by 1.746 seconds over Mitchell for the $8,000 payday, his fourth career Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series victory and second overall feature win of the season.
Quotable: “S—t man, I wasn’t worried about the redraw, I just know I’m gonna draw the four (pill). If you’re going to win these races, it don’t matter if you start on the pole or 10th,” Winger said, before later adding, “I don’t want to leave nobody out, thinking I’m dogging nobody, but it’s in my opinion, the best regional tour in America. The guys you see up here, anytime a national touring race comes in their neck of the woods, you’re gonna have to race them. My car is just really good, thanks to my Dad for all he does, it’s just me and him.”
Key notes: Winger quickly moved from his fourth starting spot to second by lap three, then took advantage as Zack Mitchell was mired in heavy lapped traffic, sliding by Mitchell on the bottom as they entered the third turn on the 10th lap. ... Winger led the final 31 laps unchallenged for his second feature win of the season, adding to May 16's Gene Maine Memorial at Georgia's Needmore Speedway, worth $7,501 on the Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series. ... It's Winger's first Hunt the Front victory since Oct. 6, 2023's Southern Showcase opener at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway, worth $5,000. ... Second-starting Mitchell, of Enoree, S.C., led the opening nine laps before giving way to Winger then losing second to Sam Seawright after a lap-30 restart, before reclaiming the runner-up spot with nine laps to go. ... Series rookie Jake O'Neil worked his way to third on lap 36 until he jumped the turn-two cushion a couple laps later, lifting eighth-starting Dalton Cook to finish third, with Seawright in fourth; O'Neil nipped Spencer Hughes by 0.009 of a second at the line to complete the top-five finishers. ... Polesitter Joseph Joiner sustained right side damage in the early going and faded to finish eighth. ... Fourteenth-starting Oakley Johns used a last-lap pass by Dillard Hatchett to finish ninth, dropping Hatchett to 10th in the final rundown. ... The race was slowed by three cautions, the first coming on lap 21 when Trent Mathis retired. ... Lucas Oil Series regular Clay Harris slowed from 10th on the ensuing restart and collected Evan Ellis, ending their race. ... Brian Rickman slowed from 16th down the backstretch for the final stoppage on lap 30. ... The 40-lapper lasted 19 minutes with 15 starters running at the finish. ... Walker Greer scratched. ... The Ollie's Clash at the Mag concludes with Saturday's 60-lap, $12,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Smiths Station, Ala., started eighth and finished third; Jadon Frame of Winchester, Tenn., started 12th and finished seventh.
