Key notes: The POWRi Heartland Late Model Tour contests its second-ever event in this weekend’s El Capitan Classic at Dodge City Raceway Park, concluding with Saturday’s $3,000-to-win finale. … The two-day program began when Josh Leonard of Gibbon, Neb., led the final 27 laps of Friday’s 30-lap, $2,500-to-win opener. Leonard grabbed his third major Dodge City victory since May of 2024, his first on the Heartland Tour, adding to $1,000 victories on the now-defunct United Rebel Series. … Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., won May 15’s inaugural Heartland Late Model event at Legit Speedway Park in West Plains, Mo., but he is competing this weekend at Salina (Okla.) Highbanks Speedway. … Kip Hughes of Enid, Okla., who advanced from eighth to finish second in Friday’s opener, has four Dodge City specials since July of 2019, earning $7,000 over that span. … Delbert Smith of Wichita, Kan., grabbed a $1,200 victory there in June of 2011, co-sanctioned on the now-defunct Championship Dirt Motorsports and Midwest Dirt Late Model Series. … Tanner Mullens of Wichita, Kan., earned three Rebel Series victories there last year, but hasn’t competed in a Late Model since last Fourth of July at Enid (Okla.)
