Ricky Thornton Jr. pulls away from runner-up Garrett Alberson.
What won the race: Going under race-dominating Garrett Alberson on the 32nd lap, sixth-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., led the rest of Saturday's Conococheague 50 at Hagerstown Speedway for a $25,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Thornton's fifth series victory of the season came by a 2.984-second margin over Alberson with polesitter Daulton Wilson in third.
Quotable: "It's nice. I was here a few years ago and I gave one away on the last lap, so it's nice to come back and get a win like that," Thornton said. "Obviously Garrett was really good. I felt like if we didn't get to traffic, there was no way I was gonna be able to pass him. He slipped up just a little bit that first (time) getting into traffic I knew I had to take it."
Key notes: Ricky Thornton Jr., the reigning series champ, notched his first victory at the half-mile Hagerstown oval and 40th career full-field victory. He lost 2021's Lucas Oil Series race to Tim McCreadie on the last lap. ... Thornton overtook Devin Moran in series points and earned his richest victory of 2025 among seven triumphs overall. ... Runner-up Garrett Alberson ran unchallenged until Thornton closed in past halfway and slipped under the leader in turn three, denying Alberson a crossover move exiting turn four. Alberson said his car's handling tightened up. ... Third-running Jonathan Davenport got too high on the lap-eight restart and slipped back to ninth; he regained three positions to finish sixth. ... Four cautions slowed the action, including when seventh-running Carson Ferguson went around in turn four on lap 20. ... Mason Zeigler slowed on the eighth lap and Trevor Collins slowed on the 14th circuit (Brandon Overton retired during the caution after losing power). ... On the 19th lap, Dylan Yoder and Kyle Hardy spun in turn four. ... The checkers on the feature fell at 9:55 p.m. ... Daniel Hilsabeck started the feature in a backup car.
On the move: Fast qualifier Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., started 17th and finished eighth.
