Tyler Erb (1) held off Ashton Winger (12) for the $5,000 payday.
What won the race: Sliding by early leader Kyle Bronson on the 13th lap, second-starting Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, paced the final 18 circuits of Tuesday's 30-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Springfield Raceway. Avoiding a rash of flat tires among several competitors, Erb beat Ashton Winger to the line by 0.669 of a second for a $5,000 payday, his 18th career Summer Nationals victory and the third in his last five starts.
Quotable: “Kyle (Bronson) fired off really good. The middle-top took a minute to kinda get clean where you could run up there cause I just felt like I was gonna annihilate my tires there at the beginning doing it,” Erb said. “The first restart, Mark (Whitener) was able to get by me. I just told myself ‘I don’t need to pick the bottom again, that’s no good’ and the next restart (I) picked the top. … It just worked out, my guys did a really good job today.”
Key notes: Taking the overall series points lead, Erb's 18th career victory moves him into sole possession of 11th on the tour's all-time win list. ... Eleventh-starting Ashton Winger, winner of last year's $5,000 series visit, inherited second on a lap-26 restart, but never challenged Erb. ... Brandon Sheppard finished third after a back-and-forth battle with Ethan Dotson in the closing laps; Dotson settled for fourth, just 0.272 of a second back. ... Kyle Bronson led the opening 12 laps from the pole before giving way to Erb and pitting from second under a lap-26 caution with a flat right rear; third-running Dillon McCowan's flat tire was the cause of the stoppage. McCowan recovered to 13th and Bronson to 15th after changing the flats. ... Mark Whitener rebounded to eighth after his flat right rear on the 11th lap. ... Jason Feger finished ninth after also slowing with a flat right rear on a lap-18 restart attempt; Feger used a 12th-to-ninth move on the final lap. ... The feature was slowed by five yellow flags, all of them for flat right-rear tires; additional cautions for flats included: Clay Stuckey from seventh (lap 7); Haiden Cowan from 19th (lap 18); Daulton Wilson from third under Cowan's lap-18 caution. Stuckey did not continue, while Wilson bounced back to 14th and Cowan finished 18th, the final starter to complete 30 laps. ... The race lasted just shy of 20 minutes. ... Austin Howes scratched. ... Cade Dillard failed to transfer out of the night's B-main after a flat tire derailed his chances of winning the third heat race.
On the move: Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., started 17th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Erb’s winning Best Performance Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Langenfelder Mechanical Contractors, Bulk Material Lift, First Class Septic, Roberts Bee Company, Anthony’s Pizza, JRR Trucking, Base Racing Fuel, Base Oil, Sani-Weld, Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Racing Shocks, Go Lithium Batteries, Midwest Sheet Metal, Terbo Threads and KBC Graphix.
