Jason Feger celebrates his victory in Friday's Corn State Nationals opener.
What won the race: Leading the entire distance off the outside pole without facing a serious threat, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., earned $5,000 for capturing Friday night’s 40-lap opener of the Corn State Nationals at Davenport Speedway. The 47-year-old beat Ryan Unzicker to the finish line by 1.191 seconds for his second straight and seventh overall victory this season on the MARS Late Model Championship Series.
Quotable: “Davenport’s usually not my best track,” Feger said. “I mean, we’ve struggled here quite a bit. We’ve just been trying to work hard to get a package for here and the car felt really good all night.”
Key notes: Feger’s 34th career MARS triumph extended his points lead as he chases his third consecutive title. … With the race running uninterrupted after a single caution flag on lap three for Blair Nothdurft, Feger only briefly appeared to be in danger when Unzicker closed up a couple times in lapped traffic. Disposing of a lapped car with five to go gave Feger the edge he needed to reach the checkered flag without a challenge. … Garrett Alberson, who swept last year’s Corn State Nationals, finished third after overtaking Frank Heckenast Jr. on lap 17. … Shannon Babb ran fourth for the race’s final 18 circuits while Heckenast settled for a fifth-place finish. … Caden McWhorter drove the Curless Motorsports No. 99 to an 11th-place finish after winning a heat race. … Justin Duty utilized a series provisional to start the feature in Tim Simpson’s No. 17 after his own car was sidelined by mechanical failure during heat action. … Dillon McCowan pulled off the track during pace laps with a broken lift bar and didn’t take the green flag. … The Corn State Nationals concludes with Saturday's 50-lap feature paying $10,000-to-win.
On the move: Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., started 14th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Feger’s Longhorn Chassis has a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship from Titan Industries, SC Online Sales, Hoker Trucking, The Big Cheese MM, Out-Pace Racing Products, CorrosionX, Multi Fire Wires, RemTek Enterprises, RLM Enterprises, Cheap Cars, FK Rod Ends, Keyser Manufacturing, Speedwerx, Go Lithium Battery, Bilstein Shocks, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, Wehrs Machine, VP Racing Fuels, Griffin Sign Shop and Limelight Graphics.
