Powering under Brandon Overton on the 16th lap, sixth-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., led the rest of Thursday's 40-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season opener at All-Tech Raceway. Sheppard held off Devin Moran by 0.544 of a second to claim the $10,000 Wieland Winternationals opener, his 33rd career full-field Lucas Oil Series victory and his second straight Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victory.

Heat race recap
Polesitter Hudson O’Neal edged ahead of Devin Moran and led all eight laps to win the night’s first heat race by 1.679 seconds over the fourth-starting Moran. Second-starting Max Blair and third-starting Dan Ebert held on to claim the third and fourth transfer spots into Thursday’s 40-lap Wieland Winternationals opener. … Pole-starting Justin Weaver took advantage of a lap-six restart and paced the final circuits laps in stealing the second heat from Mark Whitener, who finished 1.734 seconds back after leading the opening five laps. Fourth-starting Blair Nothdurft finishing third and ninth-starting Tyler Bruening overcame a qualifying spin to grab the fourth and final transfer position into the $10,000-to-win main event. Ryan Payne slowed on the sixth lap to draw the first caution flag of the night; he retired and was credited with ninth. … Brandon Overton cruised to a flag-to-flag victory in the third heat, taking the checkers 4.231 seconds ahead of third-starting Brandon Sheppard, who grabbed second from Jackson Hise on the third lap, relegating Hise to third. Daniel Hilsabeck started and finished fourth. … Clay Harris commanded all eight laps of the fourth and final heat race, winning by 2.748 seconds over Brian Shirley, who trailed him the entire way. Fourth-starting Josh Rice finished third while fifth-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. overcame turn-two wall contact on the second lap and recovered to complete the top-four finishers, leaving Preston Luckman and Tyler Wyant to compete in a consolation race later in the night's program.
