Cody Overton's $15,000 victory marks his richest career payday.
What won the race: Polesitter Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., led all 50 laps unchallenged to win Saturday's $15,000 Winter Freeze XV at Screven Motor Speedway, beating Ethan Dotson to the line handily for his first career Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series victory in the fledgling tour's second event. Overton notched his second career Super Late Model triumph and his first since a $5,000 Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series payday Feb. 25, 2022, at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway.
Quotable: “I don’t even know what to say … man this car was awesome. I have the best people in the industry helping me and it definitely takes all of them to do it,” a choked up Overton said. “It means a lot. Racing with all these guys, I mean, Casey (Roberts) is like a longtime hero of mine and racing with him and John (Henderson), he’s one of my biggest supporters … it’s a dream come true honestly, I feel like I’ve worked my ass off to do this and it’s finally paying.”
Key notes: Cody Overton grabbed his second overall victory of the young season after Feb. 1's 604 Crate triumph at All-Tech Raceway in Ellisville, Fla., worth $5,000. ... Overton's $15,000 payday marks the richest of his career. ... Fourth-starting Ethan Dotson slipped by John Henderson, his ASD Motorsports teammate, in the early going and trailed Overton the rest of the way. Henderson faded to sixth. ... Zack Mitchell pressured Dotson in the final laps before settling for third. ... The 50-lapper was marred by three lengthy red flags, the first coming in the opening laps and eliminating Benji Hicks, Cameron Tribble and Daniel Adam. ... The second red flag came on the ensuing restart attempt when Garrett Smith and Trent Ivey tangled as they battled for fifth, collecting Cla Knight, Ross Bailes, Casey Roberts, Payton Freeman, J.T. Spence and Jake Jackson. None of them were able to continue. ... Roberts, of Toccoa, Ga., won Friday's $5,000 Winter Freeze opener at Screven. ... Teenager Beckham Malone high centered on a turn-three barrier on the ensuing restart attempt, drawing the race's third and final red flag. Malone was treated for hand discomfort, but is expected to be OK. ... The race lasted 65 minutes, with the checkers falling at 11:45 p.m. ... Jackson Hise spun from fifth in the third heat, collecting Ray Cook who was piloting a No. 27 Joe Denby-owned entry. Hise's fuel cell leaked following the hard contact and a 20-minute red flag ensued as track officials cleared the wreckage and burned the spilled gas; Hise and Cook were OK.
On the move: Luke Morey of Zeeland, Mich., started 21st and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Tri-Star Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Budweiser, Shaw Trucking, Tribble Electric, The Morley Companies, Supply Chain Management, Coltman Farms Racing, Big Dog Stump & Tree, Buffalo Bar & Grill, Bilstein Shocks, Earnhardt Technologies Group, Boswell Oil and Convenient Lube.
