Ethan Wilson celebrates a $5,000 Ultimate Southeast victory at Sumter.
What won the race: Slipping by race-long leader Gray Parton as they came to complete lap 34, Ethan Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., led the remainder of Saturday's 40-lap Ultimate Southeast Series stop at Sumter Speedway. Wilson held off Parton on a lap-39 restart and beat him by 1.171 seconds for the $5,000 payday, securing his third career Ultimate Southeast victory and first since April 6, 2024, at Lake View Motor Speedway in Nichols, S.C.
Quotable: “The racecar was awesome. I mean, we had a lot of confidence from the last time we raced down here,” Wilson said. “The way we had kinda got stacked up (on the bottom), I think I could have (passed Gray Parton on the outside) if he ever would’ve moved down a little bit, I think I could’ve rolled him. But either way, it just goes back to the racecar man, it’s a dream to drive and I can’t thank them enough.”
Key notes: Gray Parton led the opening 33 laps from the outside front-row before giving way to Wilson and settling for second. ... Jamison McBride spun from third on lap 39, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkers; he continued and finished 12th, the final driver to complete 40 laps. ... Polesitter Adam Yarbrough was called for jumping the race's initial start and penalized a starting row; he inherited third on the lap-39 restart. ... Donovan Jackson improved 11 positions and placed eighth. ... The race was marred by a rash of incidents at the onset, the longest being a 20-minute red flag when five cars piled up inside turn four involving Beckham Malone and brothers Justin and Austin Mintz, among others (no one was hurt). ... Kale Green spun in turn two to setup the lap-three restart melee (David Yandle spun to avoid). ... Steve Banal, last year's tour winner at Sumter, slowed for a lap-two yellow and was the race's first retiree. ... The main event lasted 41 minutes, with 13 starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., started 21st and finished ninth.
