Brandon Sheppard discusses his Week 3 title-clinching victory.
What won the race: Ending Jason Feger's two-race winning streak on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals, Brandon Sheppard led all but the first lap Sunday at Clarksville Speedway for a $5,000 victory. Sheppard, who started outside the front row, took the checkers 1.810 seconds ahead of the polesitting Feger, who won Illinois races the previous two nights in Farmer City and Highland.
Quotable: "Man, we've had a great car all week long. Just for some reason I haven't been able to heat race and put a full night together. Tonight we're able to do that," Sheppard said, adding that "if you asked me at the beginning of the week which one I was going to win, I wouldn't have said this one for sure."
Key notes: Brandon Sheppard's 28th career series victory came with another $10,000 as the tour's Week 3 champ. ... The 2013 tour champion's previous Summer Nationals victory came Aug. 13, 2021, at Highland (Ill.) Speedway. ... Sheppard's only other tour victory at Clarksville came in 2013. ... The lone caution in the 30-lapper came on the 27th lap when Josh Putnam slowed with a flat left-rear tire. ... The checkers fell on the feature at about 10:15 p.m. local time. ... In prelims, several cautions and pileups slowed the heat races, including the second heat when brothers and teammates Brenden and Brody Smith tangled multiple times. ... Jensen Ford was involved in multiple cautions in the final heat, getting hung up with eventual heat race winner Brandon Sheppard and later spinning while running fourth. ... Christian Hanger retired while in a heat-four transfer spot and Michael Luna, the second-to-slowest qualifier, got the final transfer position. ... The event was billed as the final Summer Nationals race at Clarksville with an expected sale of the property imminent.
On the move: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., started 14th and finished 11th.
