Tony Jackson Jr. takes the checkers at Quincy Raceway.
What won the race: Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., fired off from the outside front row and never looked back for a dominant victory in Sunday's 30-lap Gem City Showdown at Quincy Raceway, notching his second MARS Late Model Championship Series win this season and 22nd of his career. Jackson beat Jason Feger by 1.272 seconds for the $5,000 payday, denying Feger the MARS weekend sweep.
Quotable: “Jason Feger and Ryan Unzicker will make you step your game up, they’re pretty tough,” Jackson said before later adding, “We kinda turned our year around and if we’d made some changes, and Tim (Douglas) has been a big help to me.”
Key notes: Jackson's other MARS Series victory came Aug. 23 at Red Hill Raceway in Sumner, Ill., also worth $5,000. ... It's his third overall feature win this season, adding to May 10's Bad Boy 98 finale in Comp Cams Series action at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Ark., worth $12,000. ... Points leader and reigning champ Jason Feger slid back by Ryan Unzicker for second on a lap-29 restart and trailed Jackson the final couple of laps, but never truly challenged for the lead; Feger also held the runner-up spot for the opening nine laps. ... Feger, who won May's earlier series visit to Quincy, entered seeking the MARS weekend sweep after winning both nights of the Corn State Nationals at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway, worth more than $15,000. ... Unzicker, of El Paso, Ill., pursued Jackson from laps 10-28 before settling for third. ... Fourth-finishing Jeff Herzog regained the spot from Caden McWhorter on lap 26; McWhorter slipped to seventh before slapping the outside wall and ripping his spoiler off, then slowed on lap 29 for race's second and final caution. He was credited with 12th. ... Tenth-running Chevy Boyer hit the turn-three wall hard on lap 24, nearly climbing it before slamming back down on the track and drawing the first stoppage. ... The feature lasted 11 minutes with nine starters completing 30 laps. ... Brandon Queen scratched.
On the move: Jake Little of Springfield, Ill., started 16th and finished ninth.
