Ben Watkins celebrates his fourth straight Gaston Shrine Race victory.
What won the race: Ben Watkins of Rock Hill, S.C., fired off from outside the front row and led 40 laps of Friday’s 53rd annual Gaston County Shrine Race, earning $4,000 on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series. Watkins beat Adam Yarbrough to the line by 1.328 seconds to win his fourth straight Shrine Race and his third series victory and 17th of his career.
Key notes: Watkins also won Carolina Clash events April 26 at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway and March 8 at County Line Raceway in Elm City, N.C. ... Fifth-starting Adam Yarbrough took second on lap five and trailed Watkins the rest of the way. ... Ethan Wilson reclaimed third from polesitter Layton Sullivan, who settled for fourth. ... Dalton Peavy improved 14 positions for an eighth-place finish. ... The race was slowed by four cautions, the first coming when Anthony Sanders retired on the third lap. ... Gavin Cowan and Tim Allen were eliminated during a lap-18 caution then Jamison McBride retired after a lap-19 restart incident. ...
