Shane Clanton celebrates a $12,000 payday, his first win in nearly a year.
What won the race: Executing a perfect crossover move past Josh Putnam on the 33rd lap, second-starting Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., fought off late challenges from Cade Dillard on Saturday to win Magnolia's $12,000 Clash at the Mag finale. Clanton pulled away as Dillard had a deflating right-rear tire in the closing laps, taking the checkers 1.602 seconds ahead for his first career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series victory and first win in nearly a year.
Quotable: “This is a young man’s sport right here, being 50 years old, I’m wore out,” Clanton said. “I was trying to dodge the holes (on the bottom), but you could go through them and make some ground. Josh (Putnam) was doing a hell of job trying to make his car go off turn two over there. I got a good run, didn’t mean to get into him in three, but I was trying to slide him to get back to my spot in three and four. It was a hell of a race.”
Key notes: Clanton led twice for 19 laps (12, 33-50) en route to his first win since Aug. 18, a $15,000 Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series feature at Senoia (Ga.) Raceway. ... Josh Putnam led all but one of the opening 32 laps before Clanton slid by him at the entrance of turn one on lap 33. Clanton made slight contact with Putnam on a turn-three slide job when he led lap 12, but Putnam quickly regained control by turn two of the following lap. ... Eighth-starting Sam Seawright grabbed third from Putnam on lap 48, relegating Putnam to fourth. ... Jake O'Neil, Friday's third-place finisher, worked his way as high as third in the opening laps before settling in fifth. ... Friday's runner up Tyler Erb finished sixth. ... Points leader Billy Moyer improved six spots to finish seventh. ... The race was slowed by two cautions, the final one coming when Neil Baggett slowed on lap 21 and retired; Chad Thrash required a tow off the track for an unrelated issue. ... Jon Mitchell slowed on the eighth lap for the opening stoppage and was credited 26th as the first retiree. ... The feature lasted 22 minutes with 15 starters completing 50 laps. ... Ashton Winger, winner of Friday's $5,000 Clash at the Mag prelim, retired in heat action.
On the move: David Breazeale of Four Corners, Miss., started 18th and finished ninth.
