What won the race: Drawing alongside leader Jake Little as he bounced in the treacherous turn-four cushion on the final lap, seventh-starting Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., nipped Little at the line by 0.136 of a second to win Saturday's $10,000 11th annual KerbyStrong at Macon Speedway. Unzicker led only the final lap for his third MARS Championship Series victory this season and 14th of his career.
Quotable: “The track had plenty of character. (Jake Little) put on a good race right there, he just got unlucky, honestly. He was hitting the holes pretty good and he started bouncing at the wrong time and I was just good enough to be right there,” Unzicker said. “That’s what I keep telling my guys, and everybody, you gotta be right there to pounce. When somebody makes a mistake, you gotta be right there.”
Key notes: Unzicker's other two MARS wins came in April 26's $5,098 Garry Swibold Memorial at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway and July 19 at I-55 Federated Raceway in Pevely, Mo., worth $5,000. ... Sixth-starting Jake Little powered around the outside of Jason Feger for the lead on lap 21 and controlled the race until the last corner of the final lap. Little was chasing his first career MARS triumph. ... The pole-starting Feger led twice for 19 laps (1-12, 14-20) before settling for fifth. ... Steve Sheppard Jr. grabbed fourth from Feger on a lap-48 restart. ... Shannon Babb charged to lead lap 13 then retired from third under a lap-20 caution for Tucker Finch's flat left-rear tire. Babb was credited with 19th. … The race was slowed by seven cautions, the final one coming when third-running Zach Taylor climbed the choppy turn-four cushion and the wall, nearly flipping over while collecting seventh-place Dakota Ewing. Neither driver continued, though Ewing completed the 47th lap and moved ahead of Taylor in the final rundown. … Tony Jackson Jr. spun from ninth on the 45th lap; he continued and finished eighth, the final starter to complete 50 laps. … Daryn Klein slowed from ninth and retired on lap 22. ... Kyle Hammer pulled off on the first lap aboard the Sheppard family-owned No. B5 Rocket after scratching from his heat race. … The event honored Kerby Damery, of Macon, Ill., a former Macon track champion. Damery fought appendix cancer before dying on Feb. 8, 2015, at the age of 49. The KerbyStrong Foundation was opened in Damery’s memory and raises money for the Decatur Memorial Foundation, supporting Macon County locals. Damery’s son, Blake, finished 17th after retiring at the halfway mark. … The 50-lapper lasted just shy of 30 minutes.
On the move: Jayme Zidar of Hales Corners, Wis., started 13th and finished sixth.
