Mike Mullen celebrates his first Dirt Kings Tour victory this season.
What won the race: Mike Mullen of Seymour, Wis., led all 50 laps largely unchallenged in winning Thursday night's $5,000 King of the Fair in the Wabam Dirt Kings Tour debut at The Hill Raceway. Mullen beat Joel Bennett to the line by 1.154 seconds for his first Dirt Kings victory this season and eighth of his career.
Key notes: Mullen earned his first Dirt Kings Tour victory since last Sept. 14 at his hometown track of Outagamie Speedway. ... It's his fifth overall feature win this season, adding to three local victories at Outagamie and May 10's $1,500 triumph in unsanctioned Super Late Models at Plymouth (Wis.) Dirt Track. ... Fifth-starting Joel Bennett grabbed second on a lap-20 restart and trailed Mullen the final 30 laps, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Nick Anvelink slipped to fourth on the opening start, but could only work his way back to third. Anvelink matched Mitch McGrath's qualifying time of 14.186 seconds, but McGrath was awarded fast qualifier honors since he was first to hit the track. ... McGrath, of Waukesha, Wis., started fourth and slipped to eighth. ... Dan Bargender gained seven spots and just missed a top-10 finish, in 11th. ... Taylor Scheffler trailed Mullen the opening 19 laps before tangling with Chris Oertel, resulting contact sending Oertel spinning across the treacherous bumps in turns one and two. Oertel did not continue, while Scheffler could never recover after tagging the field and finished 13th. ... Brett Swedberg overcame spins on lap 26 and 36 to finish 12th. ... Tim Rothe spun on lap two to draw the first caution, sending Oertel spinning to avoid. Rothe retired and was credited with 21st. ... Being ran in conjunction with the Door County Fair, Thursday's feature lasted 24 minutes, with 14 starters completing 50 laps. ... Bill Edler scratched after heat race action.
