Dallon Murty earned $5,086 for his Bill Kirk Memorial victory.
What won the race: Turning back multiple challenges from veteran racers Chad Simpson and Tad Pospisil, Late Model rookie Dallon Murty led all but one lap of Friday's 30-lap Bill Kirk Memorial at Park Jefferson Speedway for a $5,086 payday on the Malvern West Series. The pole-starting Murty took the checkers 1.018 seconds ahead of Simpson for his second series victory in the caution-plagued feature.
Quotable: "Oh man, that was a race. I didn't know what to do. Thanks to (spotter) Jonah (Bearden), a huge shoutout to him. He was putting me where I needed to be," the 20-year-old Murty said, adding that he "didn't want to try to block the slider or do anything down there, so I figured I just at least try to hit the cushion every lap. I tried everything down here and it must have worked out."
Key notes: Murty's victory ended Tad Pospisil's two-race Malvern West winning streak (Murty is also a two-time winner on the Malvern East circuit this season). ... Chad Simpson led only the fifth lap with a slide job after the first restart. ... Seven cautions slowed the action, the most significant when Pospisil's car went up in smoke on the 25th lap (he ran among the top three for 19 laps but had faded to eighth). ... The first caution appeared on the fifth lap when Corey Zeitner slowed (Zeitner rallied from the tail to finish fourth). ... A lap-14 yellow dropped for a slowing Jake Neal (J.C. Wyman went over the turn-one banking on the restart). ... On the 15th lap, Bill Leighton Jr. went around exiting turn four after a scrape with Jacob Hosbscheidt and a lap-16 yellow dropped when Darrel DeFrance and Cory Dumpert tangled in turn three. ... A Hobscheidt-Wyman dual spin between turns three and four slowed the action on the 19th lap. ... Hall of Famer Kyle Berck elected to start on the tail and retired quickly with engine issues. ... The Bill Kirk Memorial honored the Iowa Hall of Famer from Salix, Iowa, who won 14 multidivision championships in a career driving No. 86 race cars that started in 1959. Bill Kirk died in 1988 and is scheduled to be inducted into the Northeast Nebraska Motorsports Hall of Fame in October. … The race was originally scheduled Aug. 1 on the Tri-State Late Model Series before getting postponed by rain and pushed to the track’s Malvern West Series date, the tour's first visit to the track in seven years.
On the move: Jason Hahne of Webster City, Iowa, started eighth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Murty’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Bidwell Farms, Murty Farms, Stealth Oilwell Services, Kash Money Motorsports, Bilstein Shocks, Swift Springs, Performance Bodies, Fast Shafts driveshafts, Velocita Premium Motorsports Apparel, Quality Services and Malvern Bank.
