Josh Rice celebrates his first career Wooldridge Memorial victory.
What won the race: Taking control when race-long leader Jason Jameson slowed after losing his left-rear wheel and tire on a lap-39 restart, third-starting Josh Rice of Crittenden, Ky., led the final 21 laps to win his first career Butterball Wooldridge Memorial at Richmond Raceway. Rice beat Michael Chilton by 3.990 seconds for a $12,059 payday co-sanctioned by the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man and Ultimate Heart of America Series.
Quotable: “I hate that for Jason (Jameson), I really wanted to race it out with him. There at the start, they were gone and we were all pretty much on the same tires. For whatever reason, mine took a little bit to get going and once I got going, I had a hot rod. I was really good,” Rice said. “Richmond did a great job (with the track) there, I was all the way in fourth at one point and ended up winning.”
Key notes: Rice raced to his eighth overall feature victory this season and his third on the Iron-Man Series; his 19th career triumph extends his lead on the tour's all-time win list. ... His other Iron-Man wins came May 10 at Ohio's Atomic Speedway and May 24 at Butler Motor Speedway in Quincy, Mich., both worth $5,000. ... It's Rice's fifth career Ultimate HofA victory, his first this season and first since Sept. 2, 2023, at Red Hill Raceway in Sumner, Ill. ... His fifth career series win ties him with Michael Chilton and Zack Dohm for the all-time lead on that tour. ... The seventh-starting Chilton, of Salvisa, Ky., took second on a lap-46 restart, but never seriously challenged Rice. ... Second-starting Jason Jameson, who entered chasing the Iron-Man weekend sweep after winning Friday's $5,000 opener at Ohio's Moler Raceway Park, led the opening 38 laps before losing his left-rear wheel and tire assembly on a lap-39 restart attempt. ... Jameson's incident drew a 10-minute red flag as track officials removed his car from the racing surface; he retired and was credited with 19th. ... Polesitter Camaron Marlar trailed Jameson the opening 27 laps before settling for third. ... Before Jameson's incident, the race was slowed by two Daniel Shelton spins (opening lap and lap 39). ... Trevor Landrum slowed from 10th on lap 46 before retiring. ... Ninth-running Clint Keenan spun on lap 50; he continued to finish 12th, the final starter to complete 59 laps. ... The sixth and final caution flag flew for a bad restart on the ensuing attempt. ... The event honored National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Paul “Butterball” Wooldridge of Frankfort, Ky., a longtime racer and supporter of Richmond Raceway; Wooldridge died on Christmas Day in 1987 at the age of 56. ... Sixteen starters were running at the end of the 38-minute feature.
On the move: Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., started 14th and finished fifth.
