What won the race: Overtaking fellow front-row starter Casey Roberts on the 19th lap, Tucker Anderson of Blairsville, Ga., won on the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series for the second time this season at Sugar Creek Raceway. The pole-starting Anderson earned $5,757 in winning the fourth annual Russell Thomas Memorial as he took the checkers 3.418 seconds over Roberts.
Quotable: “Yeah I about stepped on it on the first lap. I knew if I got that lead (in the early laps), I could pace the race pretty good,” Anderson said. “I just messed up a little bit, I ain’t raced enough to be good yet."
Key notes: Tucker Anderson repeated his SAS victory from June 21 at Sugar Creek, a victory that marked his first in the Super Late Model division. ... In Saturday's 40-lapper, Anderson chased outside front-row starter Casey Roberts the first half of the race before taking command. ... Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., ran third for 19 laps before retiring. ... Jamie Oliver gave up the eighth spot in retiring after nine laps. ... Eight of 22 starters completed 40 laps. ... Daniel Wilson, Jason Deal and Dillon Tidmore were eliminated in a first-lap tangle. ... The event honored Russell Thomas, the late Georgia racer and 1995 track champion at Whittier, N.C.'s Smoky Mountain Raceway, who died in December of 2021.
On the move: Chris Woods of Statham, Ga., started 13th and finished fifth for his best-ever Super Late Model finish.
Winner's sponsors: Anderson's Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Beaverdam Trucking, Coltman Farms Racing, Vinson Sims Construction, Ray Cook Racing, MPM Marketing and Wimpy Enterprises.
