Brandon Sheppard celebrates his second straight Speedweeks victory.
What won the race: Powering under Brandon Overton on the 16th lap, sixth-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., led the rest of Thursday's 40-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season opener at All-Tech Raceway. Sheppard held off Devin Moran by 0.544 of a second to claim the $10,000 Wieland Winternationals opener, his 33rd career full-field Lucas Oil Series victory and his second straight Georgia-Florida Speedweeks victory.
Quotable: “It definitely feels good (to win). We’ve had a really fast race car all of Speedweeks, so far,” Sheppard said. “We just needed a few things to go our way and Mark (Richards) and the boys have been tweaking on this thing. We’ve just been working really hard and trying to get everything just right for the way I like it.”
Key notes: Sheppard's second consecutive Speedweeks victory includes the Feb. 14 DIRTcar Nationals finale at nearby Volusia Speedway, worth $20,000; he has 24 Speedweeks victory overall. ... It's his first full-field Lucas Oil win since July 12 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.. ... Defending series champ Devin Moran grabbed second on a lap-30 restart but never seriously threatened Sheppard. ... Polesitter Hudson O'Neal surged back to third on lap 37, relegating early leader Brandon Overton to fourth. ... Dan Ebert overcame missing a left-front nosepiece to finish seventh. ... Kyle Bronson improved 11 spots to finish ninth after transferring through a consolation race. ... Five cautions slowed the action the fifth on the 30th lap when second-running Clay Harris slammed the turn-two wall; he retired in 22nd. ... Debris from Ebert's left-front nose damage drew the fourth stoppage on lap 20. ... Third-starting Justin Weaver ran as high as second in the early going before slipping to 12th and spinning for the third yellow flag on lap 17; he continued until retiring under the lap-30 caution. ... Chris Madden slowed from 16th and retired for the first caution on lap 15 before Dillon McCowan and Jackson Hise tangled on the ensuing restart. ... The race lasted 31 minutes with 21 starters completing 40 laps.
On the move: Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., started 19th and finished fifth.
