Nick Hoffman (center) topped the podium at Hendry County.
What won the race: Regaining control from Bobby Pierce as they battled through traffic on lap 54, fourth-starting Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., survived a late-race restart to win Saturday's 60-lap Swamp Cabbage 100 finale at Hendry County Motorsports Park. Hoffman led 41 of the final 42 laps and held off a last-lap gasp by Pierce, beating him to the line by 0.369 of a second for the $20,000 payday, his third World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the season and 14th of his career.
Quotable: “I could certainly hear (Bobby Pierce) out there. If he was gonna get it, he was gonna have to earn it,” Hoffman said. “I just knew that bottom (line) was starting to clean up and getting pretty good, so he threw caution into the wind and was going for it. I knew I just had to hit six pretty good laps there and I thought I’d be able to hold him off, but he just kept inching closer. I could watch that video board and see him inch closer and closer.”
Key notes: Hoffman notched his fourth victory of the season including one of Feb. 11's $5,000 DIRTcar-sanctioned semifeatures at nearby Volusia Speedway. ... It's his sixth career Georgia-Florida Speedweeks triumph and first away from Volusia. ... Sixth-starting Bobby Pierce charged to lead laps 6-13 before Hoffman initially took command on the 14th lap. Pierce passed Hoffman back on lap 53 as they battled amidst heavy lapped traffic before Hoffman regained the top spot for the final time on the ensuing lap. ... Pierce settled for second after topping Friday's 40-lap, $12,000 Swamp Cabbage opener. ... Drake Troutman and Ethan Dotson passed Dustin Sorensen after the lap-55 restart, relegating Sorensen to sixth. ... Sam Seawright led the opening five laps from the pole before slipping to 10th. ... There were four lead changes amongst Seawright, Pierce and Hoffman. … The race was slowed by four cautions, the final one coming for Tristan Chamberlain slowing with five laps remaining after apparent contact with Pierce cut his right-rear tire; Chamberlain soldiered to 15th after changing the flat. … Tim McCreadie slowed from 10th and pulled off on the 33rd lap. … The second slowdown came for debris on lap 25. … Eli Johnson slowed from 17th to trigger the race’s first slowdown on lap 16; he was credited with 19th at his home track. … The 60-lapper lasted 25 minutes with 16 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., started 12th and finished fourth.
