Tony Jackson Jr. completes his Springfield Raceway sweep.
What won the race: Powering around Dillon McCowan out of turn four and taking the lead for good on the 21st lap, polesitter Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., paced the final 10 circuits of Saturday's 30-lap March Madness finale at Springfield Raceway, securing a weekend sweep worth more than $10,000. Jackson beat McCowan to the checkers by 2.434 seconds for his 18th career Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory and second in as many nights after leading all 30 laps of Friday's $5,000 opener.
Quotable: “Jerry (Hoffman)’s racetrack, you just don’t know where to go. I was using all the lines and I knew Dillon (McCowan) had come from the back and he’s very good here,” Jackson said. “When he got by me, I just had to switch lines with him, right? He was running around the bottom, so I switched to the top and that was all she wrote.”
Key notes: Jackson led three times for 24 laps (1-10, 16-19, 21-30) en route to his second victory of the season. ... Dillon McCowan emerged as Jackson's only challenger, leading twice for six laps (11-15, 20) before settling for second. ... There were four lead changes between Jackson and McCowan. ... Jackson led 54 of 60 laps contested over the doubleheader weekend. ... Hometown racer Terry Phillips prevailed to finish third after a back-and-forth battle with Derrick Stewart in the closing laps, relegating Stewart to fourth. ... Timothy Culp improved seven positions to finish seventh. ... Aaron Marrant gained nine spots to place eighth. ... Caden McWhorter overcame a lap-two tangle with Glen Powell to finish 10th. Powell continued until sideswiping a spinning Tyler Kuykendall on a lap-11 restart attempt. ... Eighth-running Eli Ross appeared to lose his right-rear wheel and tire before slowing to draw the original lap-11 slowdown. ... Shane DeMey finished 15th after receiving a provisional starting position courtesy of an online fan vote. ... Corey Zeitner spun in turn four on lap 13 for the night's fourth yellow flag. ... Third-running Jeff Herzog suffered a flat right-rear tire to draw the race's fifth and final caution on the 20th lap; he soldiered to a 12th-place finish after pitting. ... The 30-lap March Madness finale lasted 23 minutes with 16 starters completing the distance. ... Billy Moyer, slated to start second, pulled off after his car trailed a plume of smoke during pace laps. Daniel Adam also had trouble in pace laps, losing his left-rear wheel and tire; both drivers failed to take the green flag.
