Tanner Mullens and supporters after his sweep at Dodge City.
What won the race: Powering under early leader Braxten Leonard on the ninth lap, third-starting Tanner Mullens of Wichita, Kan., paced the final 21 laps to win Saturday's $4,000 seventh annual Dave Garmann Memorial finale at Dodge City Raceway Park. Mullens beat Josh Leonard to the checkers by 2.098 seconds to sweep the two-day Garmann Memorial, earning more than $5,000 on the United Rebel Late Model Series.
Quotable: “(The car) was really good there about to that last yellow (flag), I rolled the nose under when I hit them infield tires and it got pretty squirrely to drive,” Mullens said. “(I’m) just glad to hang on there at the end and thanks to all the fans for coming out, all my supporters.”
Key notes: Mullens makes it five victories in five starts this season, all of them on the United Rebel tour and three of them coming at Dodge City (includes May 3's $1,000 series visit). ... Mullens doubled his race winnings thus far, earning more than $8,000 now across his five career series triumphs. ... Josh Leonard prevailed to finish second after a back-and-forth battle with Jake Nightingale in the closing laps; Nightingale settled for third. ... Ninth-starting Kip Hughes climbed four spots and rounded out the top five. ... Teenager Braxten Leonard led the opening eight laps from the outside pole before slipping to ninth. ... Delbert Smith slowed from 13th to trigger the race's first caution on lap 24 after appearing to make contact with the turn-three wall; he did not continue. ... Jesse Smith lost an engine on the ensuing restart for the second and final slowdown. ... The two-day event honored Dave Garmann, one of Southwest Kansas’s most respected and successful grassroots racers. He was a longtime competitor known for his smooth driving style and earned a NASCAR Cup championship in 2017 with Martin Truex Jr.'s Furniture Row Racing team; Garmann died on March 14, 2019, at the age of 57 after a short bout with liver cancer. ... The feature lasted 14 minutes, with 10 starters completing 30 laps. ... TeeJay Janousek scratched.
On the move: Mike Petersilie of Hoisington, Kan., started 14th and finished sixth.
