Kyle Peterlin heads to victory at Hibbing Speedway.
What won the race: Snapping an absence from victory lane of exactly one year on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series, Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing, Minn., captured Sunday’s 40-lap finale of the 47th annual Bill Engelstad Labor Day Shootout at Hibbing Speedway. He wrestled the lead from Shane Sabraski for the second and final time on lap 14 and controlled the remainder of the distance to take the $3,000 top prize by 1.029 seconds over Jeff Provinzino.
Quotable: “That was an awesome race between Shane and Jeff and I for a while, and then it locked down,” Peterlin said. “But before that, it was really, really fun. I gave it everything I absolutely had to get by Shane. He’s a very tough racer, so is Jeff. I’m thankful for Shane for being such a good driver, and Jeff also … everybody that was up front, we all race each other a lot so there’s a lot of respect there.”
Key notes: Peterlin nosed ahead of Sabraski to take the lead for the first time on lap 10 before seizing the position for good on lap 14. He went on to record his seventh career WISSOTA Challenge Series triumph — all coming at his hometown Hibbing oval, including his last win on Aug. 31, 2024. … Peterlin recorded his sixth career Labor Day Shootout victory. His previous wins came in 2018, ’19, ’23 (two) and ’24. … Provinzino overtook Sabraski for second on lap 26 and held the spot to the finish as the surface locked down on the bottom. … Sabraski settled for third after leading laps 1-9 and 11-13. … Four caution flags slowed the race starting with an opening-lap incident involving Keith Niemi. … Derek Vesel spun between turns one and two on lap six, Jamie Lautiger slowed one circuit later and the final caution was displayed on lap 12. … Kevin Eder, who won Saturday’s $3,000 Labor Day Shootout opener, advanced from the 14th starting spot to finish eighth.
On the move: Zach Wohlers of Cohasset, Minn., started 22nd and finished 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Peterlin’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Town & Country Garages & Cabins, Up North Lettering, Grandma and Grandpa Peterlin, Mr. Nick’s Corner Bar, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, Speedwerx, Shocks by Hammer, AFCO Brakes, Allstar Performance and Factory Team Snap Signs.
