Ryan Gustin celebrates his first career Summer Nationals victory.
What won the race: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, led all but the first lap en route to winning Tuesday's $5,000 Governors Cup at Davenport Speedway, earning his first career DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. Gustin powered around Jake Timm and held off a lap-six restart challenge from Ashton Winger before beating Timm to the line by 2.757 seconds for his first victory since March 22 at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway.
Quotable: “We’ve lost a bunch of them here, whether it be flat tires or mechanical issues or whatever. It definitely feels good to win here,” Gustin said. “It’s been an uphill battle for sure. We unloaded yesterday and didn’t what the heck to do, so we went to work today and found a bunch of things that weren’t correct and fixed them and this thing drove right around there tonight.”
Key notes: Gustin joins Drake Troutman as the second first-time series winner this season and becomes the fifth winner through the first seven races. ... It's his third overall victory of the season after also winning Jan. 24's DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals season opener for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, worth $12,000. ... Jake Timm, the night's fast qualifier and leader of the opening lap, reclaimed the runner-up spot from Ashton Winger on a lap-22 restart and narrowly held him off. ... Winger, a night removed from a vicious rollover wreck at Wilmot (Wis.) Raceway, finished third, just 0.239 of a second behind Timm. ... Tyler Erb, defending Summer Nationals winner at Davenport, held fourth for 30 laps. ... Twelfth-starting Dennis Erb Jr. moved by Kyle Bronson on lap 23 and rounded out the top five, a spot better than Bronson. ... The night's program was hurried because of threatening weather. ... The race was slowed by two yellow flags, the first coming when Christian Hanger slowed from seventh after apparent driveline issues ended his night on the sixth lap. ... The second slowdown came for Jason Feger's flat right-rear tire on lap 22; Feger, winner of the $10,000 Week 1 points bonus, ended up 18th. ... Tour-opening winner Billy Moyer pulled off from 19th under the lap-22 caution. ... The main event lasted 12 minutes, with 19 starters completing 30 laps and 20 running at the finish.
On the move: Michael Leach of Sun River, Mont., started 18th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Gustin’s Todd Cooney-owned Infinity Race Car is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Alan’s Seamless Gutters, Karl Auto Group, May Properties, Murty Farms, Mark Hambelton Ford, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, FK Rod Ends, Swift Springs, VP Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Dynamic Drivelines and Performance Bodies.
