Jonathan Davenport heads to victory in the second semifeature.
What won the race: Regaining the lead with an inside move by Chris Madden on the 13th lap, second-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., paced the final 13 circuits to win Thursday's second 25-lap World 100 preliminary semifeature at Eldora Speedway. Davenport led all but four laps and beat Madden by 0.809 of a second for the night's second $12,000 prelim.
Quotable: “I kinda got lost there and didn’t know where to go. I kept looking on the board and I couldn’t tell if that was a lapped car or what that was and then Chris (Madden) showed me his nose. I’m like ‘well I better pick the pace up and try something else here’ because what I was doing obviously wasn’t working,” Davenport said. “He got held up by a lapped car and I just got a good run back on him. Once I was behind him, I could kinda judge a little bit of where I needed to be and where I couldn’t.”
Key notes: Davenport entered Thursday with 11 career Eldora crown jewel victories, including June's $100,000 Dream XXXI triumph. ... Fifth-starting Chris Madden slipped by Davenport and led laps 9-12 before Davenport regained control and never looked back. ... Chris Ferguson took third from Gregg Satterlee on lap nine and completed the podium finishers aboard the only Stinger Chassis entered this weekend. ... Seventh-starting Tim McCreadie passed Satterlee for fourth on lap 17, with Satterlee slipping to seventh at the checkers. ... Drake Troutman gained six spots and finished ninth in his World 100 event debut. ... Polesitter Brandon Overton faded to finish 14th. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 20 when Michael Leach pounded the turn-three wall shortly after being lapped by Madden and Davenport. He did not continue. ... The night's second semifeature lasted 11 minutes with 19 starters completing 25 laps. ... Brody Smith scratched for the night after apparent ignition trouble in hot laps.
On the move: Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 16th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport’s Lance Landers Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Dynagro Seed, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing & HVAC, Bobcat of Batesville, Bert Transmissions by Budda, Lucas Oil, Hoosier Racing Tire, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein Shocks and Midwest Sheet Metal.

Shootout recap

Second-starting Brandon Overton commanded all 12 laps to win Thursday’s first shootout for the second group, taking the checkers 2.130 seconds ahead of polesitter Haiden Cowan. Fast qualifier Jason Jameson improved two spots to finish fourth, with Tanner English gaining three positions to round out the top five. … Eighth-starting Jonathan Davenport powered around Chris Madden on a lap-eight restart and led the final five laps to win the group’s second shootout by 2.730 seconds over Madden. Clay Stuckey started 16th and grabbed the eighth and final transfer position into the night’s second 25-lap qualifying semifeature. The race’s first stoppage came when Dillon Kohn spun on the opening lap; he continued to finish 15th. The second yellow flag flew on lap eight after Dylan Thornton slowed from ninth aboard Cody Sommers’s DRT Chassis and retired. … Gregg Satterlee cruised to win the night’s third and final shootout among the second group of competitors, leading all 12 laps and crossing the line 0.545 of a second ahead of fourth-starting Garrett Alberson. Sixth-starting Carson Ferguson overcame heavy wall contact in time trials and gained two spots to finish fourth. Dennis Erb Jr. started 11th and finished sixth, while 12th-starting Luke Morey held off Gary Stuhler for the eighth and final transfer spot into the second 25-lap prelim. The race’s lone caution flew on the fourth lap when fifth-running Jordan Koehler slammed the turn-one wall and broke his right-rear axle, among other things; he was unable to continue and credited with 16th, but will have the option to start 26th as the second-fastest non-qualifier who failed to transfer through a shootout race.

Group B pre-race notes

After some overnight rain, weather conditions are nearly perfect with sunny skies and an afternoon high temperature reaching about 70 degrees. Forecasts for the weekend call for dry and comfortable days and cool nights. … Thursday’s preliminary program has 101 cars signed in, marking the fourth straight year that the World 100 field has topped the century mark. … Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway promoter Matt Curl conducted the drivers’ meeting. His most notable announcement was about the preliminary program formats: the three 12-lap “shootouts” for each qualifying group will have the top six starters inverted from qualifying, but the eight drivers who transfer to their respective 25-lap, $12,000-to-win semifeature will align straight-up. … Five-time World 100 winner Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., has an almost entirely new body on his Eldora car that he piloted to victory in June’s Dream (plus gold-leaf accents on a black base). In fact, it’s the first time his prolific Longhorn Chassis he reserves for Big E duty had its original rear deck replaced. … Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., gave his car owner Ken Roberts a big surprise on Thursday afternoon; when Roberts walked into the pit area, he saw Alberson and his crew members wearing red shirts while standing in front of their No. 58, which sported a new red color scheme that mirrored the look that Roberts’s legendary late father, Hershel, used on his Dirt Late Model in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Alberson and Co. never told Roberts that they were planning the throwback wrap. … Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., initially was planning to skip Eldora’s weekend to run Saturday’s Fall Clash event at Bridgeport (N.J.) Speedway, but changed his plans on Tuesday night and pointed his hauler to western Ohio after seeing an uncertain forecast for Bridgeport’s show. … Tim McCreadie’s Briggs Transport entry sporting a yellow-and-white No. 9 resembling a big-block modified driven by his late father Barefoot Bob McCreadie drew plenty of attention in the upper pit area. Many observers had to look twice at the big-block-like “rubrail” on the doors that’s included in the wrap. … A surprise entrant is Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, who is making his first attempt at the World 100 since 2019. A five-time non-qualifier for the race, Schlenk said he was prompted to enter the weekend’s action after his car felt good in Sunday’s Baltes Classic. … Jerry Bowersock of Wapakoneta, Ohio, is racing after making extensive repairs to his Dirt Late Model, which was damaged in a final-turn tangle in a semifeature during Sunday’s Baltes Classic. The veteran also suffered an apparent sprained right thumb in the incident and is wearing a brace on his hand and wrist, though he said the injury has been improving each day and won’t hamper his bid to make his first World 100 starting field since 2013. … Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., will run the JCM Motorsports Rocket Chassis No. 19m that carries a fresh orange-and-white color scheme similar to his family’s Kubota-sponsored Capital car, which is serving as his backup for the weekend. … Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., has red-and-black colors on his Rattliff Racing No. 12 as a nod to a car his father Willie drove in the ‘70s. … Gary Stuhler of Greencastle, Pa., is making his first attempt at the World 100 in over 20 years. The 70-year-old Hall of Famer has started the event’s finale five times with a top finish of third in 1989. ... Making his fourth-ever Dirt Late Model start and second start in the Super ranks, NASCAR driver Bayley Currey of Driftwood, Texas, is participating at the World 100 this week with Niece Motorsports, his Craftsman Truck Series team, paying tribute with a throwback wrap to 1980s racer Chuck Efaw, the father of Niece CEO and president Cody Efaw.
