Tim McCreadie (9) and Hudson O'Neal (71) battle at Cedar Lake.
What won the race: Surviving contact with Hudson O'Neal with two laps remaining, Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., captured Friday's USA Nationals opener at Cedar Lake Speedway. On a restart with two laps to go, O'Neal got outside the leading McCreadie entering turn three and the pair got together with McCreadie getting sideways before recovering while O'Neal spun out of contention. McCreadie restarted up front and closed out the $10,000 victory.
Quotable: "I thought I was going to spin out down there," McCreadie said. "I got lucky and hung onto it."
Key notes: The victory was McCreadie's fourth of the season on the WoO circuit and 37th of his career. ... McCreadie, who ran the inside groove most of the race, took the checkers 0.770 of a second ahead of Nick Hoffman. ... Third-finishing Chris Madden led laps 1-6 and 10-15 while swapping the lead with Hudson O'Neal, who led laps 7-9. ... McCreadie took the lead on lap 17 after O'Neal and CMadden swapped the lead several times officially and unofficially over the races initial 15 laps. ... The incident on the second-to-last restart saw O'Neal charging off the high side coming off of turn two and making contact with McCreadie, who got sideways but saved his car while O'Neal lost the handle in turn four and retired. ... Polesitter Cade Dillard faded to finish ninth. ... Fast qualifier and heat winner Garrett Alberson spun on the initial start and settled for 19th. ... Pat Doar won the Limited Late Model feature.
On the move: Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 20th and finished eighth.
