Brandon Fouts celebrates his first career Ultimate HofA Series victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Brandon Fouts of Kite, Ky., fended off early challenges from Derek Fisher and overcame several restarts on his way to leading all 40 laps of Friday's $6,500 Wince Mayabb Memorial at 191 Speedway. Fouts beat Shannon Thornsberry to the line by 1.278 seconds for his first career Ultimate Heart of America Series victory and fifth feature win this season.
Quotable: “I was actually here the night that (Wince Mayabb) passed away, it was a bad deal there. Me and (Derek) Fisher had a hell of a race that night and we probably was going to tonight,” Fouts said. “I know I got into that lapped car or whatever, caused him to get tore up. I didn’t mean to, but the flagman gave the layover flag three or four laps. I’m sorry about it, but heck, it is what it is and that’s all I can say.”
Key notes: Fouts nabbed his second 191 victory this season (May 31), adding to local Super Late Model wins at Mountain Motor Speedway in Isom, Ky. (June 27) and 201 Speedway in Sitka, Ky. (July 5, Aug. 6). ... Fouts made contact with Hunter McCloud as he attempted to lap him at the start of the 16th circuit, sending McCloud spinning and collecting second-running Derek Fisher; McCloud did not continue. ... The points leading Fisher, a two-time special event winner this season at 191, restarted 11th and appeared to take sixth from Josh Dietz on the final lap, as Dietz slowed and failed to finish. A postrace correction lifted Larry Martin Jr. to sixth, with Fisher in seventh and Dietz credited with ninth. ... Reigning series champ Cyle Forgy started 11th and finished eighth, the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... Fifth-running Justin Rattliff slowed on the second lap and was scored 19th as the race's first retiree. ... Zach Hill scratched. ... The event honored Wince Mayabb, track founder who died 15 years ago in a wreck near the track entrance. ... The race was slowed by four cautions and lasted 22 minutes. ... The weekend concludes with Saturday's $7,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Larry Martin Jr. of Maysville, Ky., started 10th and finished sixth.
