What won the race: Outside front-row starter and series points leader Dave Mass of East Bethel, Minn., led all 40 laps Friday at Grand Rapids Speedway for a $3,000 Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory. Mass won the 31st annual WISSOTA Classic by 1.781 seconds over polesitter Shane Sabraski, who regained the second spot from a fading Billy Kendall on the 26th lap.
Quotable: "Things are just clicking. It's just going good and I'm happy and the car is good and just everything played out again tonight," Mass said, adding that "I was getting nervous because I couldn't pass that one lapped car and I was like, 'Come on, just throw the white flag.' I just wanted this to be over."
Key notes: Lapping all but nine competitors, Mass notched his second career WISSOTA Challenge Series victory and second of the week. ... Mass struggled late trying to get around the slower car of Devin Fouquette, who had a flat left-front tire (the race's lone caution for sixth-running Jeff Provinzino on the 36th lap gave Mass clear racetrack the rest of the way and gave Fouquette a chance to get fresh rubber). ... Fifth-place finisher Billy Kendall was running second just past halfway and got rolling on the high side, nearly pulling alongside Mass several times but couldn't find a way past and slipped back amid traffic, eventually giving the second spot back to Shane Sabraski and settlilng for fifth. ... Jeff Massingill scratched from the feature. ... Grand Rapids hosted the third of five nights of holiday weekend action on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series. ... Kendall and Mass split twin features Wednesday at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wis., while Ashley Anderson won Thursday's Silver 1000 at Proctor (Minn.) Speedway.
On the move: Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing, Minn., started ninth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Mass’s MB Customs Race Car carries sponsorship from Shaw Trucking, Blaine Brothers Truakaline, Structural Buildings, Pallet Resource Corp, Hydraulic Specialty Inc., North American Trailer, Bud’s Auto Body, Dehn Oil Company, Speedwerx Performance Exhaust and I-94 EMR Speedway.
