Dillon McCowan and the winning team at Springfield.
What won the race: Taking advantage when majority race leader Logan Martin hopped the turn-four cushion on lap 24, second-starting Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Mo., led the final eight laps to capture Sunday's $6,064 Rex McCroskey Memorial at Springfield Raceway. McCowan held off Terry Phillips in the late going, beating him by 0.810 of a second for his first victory this season and second career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series triumph.
Quotable: “I can’t say enough about the racetrack, all I’ve heard is how it peels apart. If you can’t take a look at this thing and think it ain’t one of the best tracks in the country, you’re kidding yourself,” McCowan said. “I knew once Logan (Martin) got out there in front, he’d be hard to beat, he’s really good here. Obviously, everybody knows Clay (Stuckey) is really good here, we’ve had some hellacious battles.”
Key notes: McCowan secured his second career Springfield victory, his first since last Nov. 16's Turkey Bowl XVIII, also worth $6,064. ... His other Comp Cams Series win was Oct. 20, 2023, a $5,000 Spooky 50 opener at Super Bee Speedway in Chatham, La. ... It was McCowan's first win aboard an Adam family-owned Longhorn after joining the team earlier this season during the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. ... Fourth-starting Logan Martin hustled the Austin Vincent-owned No. 5 around the topside, taking control from early leader Clay Stuckey on a lap-five restart. Martin overcame a lap-19 tangle with Chance Mann, as contact sent Mann spinning in turn one, drawing the race's second and final caution, only for Martin to hop the turn-four cushion on the 24th lap, giving control to McCowan. … Martin, the three-time and reigning series champ, led laps 5-23 before fading to finish 11th. ... Seventh-starting Terry Phillips took the runner-up spot from Clay Stuckey on lap 26, but couldn't issue a serious challenge to McCowan over the final five laps. ... Stuckey, who led the opening four laps from the pole, settled for third. ... Points leader Billy Moyer gained four spots and rounded out the top five. ... The first yellow flag flew on the fifth lap when Scott Crigler rolled to a stop. He was credited in 22nd as the race's first retiree. ... The event honored Rex McCroskey, a fixture in the early years of the Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association who captured two series championships and whose 20 victories are tied for ninth all-time on the circuit. McCroskey’s often white No. 64 Late Model was among MLRA contenders for many years, including in 1992 and 2000 when he captured tour championships. In a racing career stretching from 1980-2003, McCroskey was a four-time starter in both the Show-Me 100 at West Plains (Mo.) Motor Speedway and the Topless 100 at Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove, Ark. He died Sept. 28, 2024, at the age of 67. ... The main event lasted 13 minutes with 20 starters completing 31 laps.
On the move: Kyle Beard of Trumann, Ark., started 19th and finished seventh.
