Mason Zeigler (25z) narrowly beats Gregg Satterlee (22) to the checkers.
What won the race: Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., held off a last-lap gasp from Gregg Satterlee and beat him to the line by 0.144 of a second to win the $6,000 top prize in Friday's 35-lap Bob Elbin Tribute at Bedford Speedway. Zeigler secured his second consecutive Appalachian Mountain Speedweek feature victory and the second of his career. It's his third overall checkered flag this season after also topping May 10's United Late Model Series opener at Latrobe (Pa.) Speedway, worth $7,500.
Quotable: “We took a gamble there (on tires), and I don’t know what Gregg (Satterlee) had on, but my right-rear was just chattering and I was praying it wasn’t gonna explode on me. It held out and we were able to get it done,” Zeigler said. “I know Gregg, that’s his line down there on the bottom of three and four, and it’s where he gets everybody, so I was trying to protect that. I was a little bit too tight and my right-rear was just a little too hot and chattering to get down where I needed to. Lucky we were able to hold him off.”
Key notes: Zeigler captured his seventh special event triumph at Bedford going back to May 31, 2019, earning more than $78,000 over that span. ... The fourth-starting Satterlee used a turn-three slider on Justin Weaver to grab second on the 21st lap and pressured Zeigler in the closing stages; Weaver, meanwhile, appeared to slow with engine issues on a lap-31 restart, triggering the race's fifth stoppage. He did not continue and was credited with 15th. ... Matt Sponaugle inherited third for lap-31 restart and rounded out the podium. ... Rick Eckert passed Bryan Bernheisel for fourth on lap 32 and finished there; Trever Feathers also slip by to finish fifth, relegating Bernheisel to sixth. ... Kyle Lee gained 11 spots, including two on the final lap, to finish seventh. ... Seventh-running Amanda Robinson slammed the turn-four wall on lap 34, drawing the sixth and final slowdown. She was credited with 14th after needing a tow back to the pits. ... Jeff Rine slowed from fifth on lap 31, then limped to the infield before retiring. ... Jeff Miller slowed from 10th for the third yellow flag on lap 28, while fifth-running Travis Stickley also retired under the caution. ... Fourth-running J.T. Spence pulled off under green on the 10th lap and was credited with 22nd. ... The night honored Bob Elbin of Woodbury, Pa., the legendary car owner whose sons still field Jeff Rine's entry. He began driving in 1956 and continued until the 1970s, when he transitioned to continuing as a car owner. Bob passed away on Sept. 28, 2021, at the age of 88. ... The 35-lapper lasted 28 minutes, with 10 starters completing the distance and 13 running at the finish. ... Trevor Collins pulled off with mechanical issues before taking the green; Ross Robinson lost an engine in the dash and scratched for the night. ... Derick Quade and Chuck Clise tangled in the third heat and failed to finish; his Longhorn will require repairs, ending his Appalachian Mountain Speedweek effort.
On the move: Andrew Wylie of Saltsburg, Pa., started 22nd and finished 10th; Chad Homan of Penfield, N.Y., started 23rd and finished 11th.
