Ryan Unzicker discusses his MARS victory at Farmer City.
What won the race: Sliding back past Ashton Winger to regain control on the 33rd lap, third-starting Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., led the final eight laps uncontested to win Friday's $5,000 Chuckwagon Food Service 40 at Farmer City Raceway. Unzicker beat Winger by 1.341 seconds for his fourth MARS Championship Series feature victory this season and 15th of his career.
Quotable: “I actually had some water pressure issues with the motor I was nervous about, I probably looked at my gauge more than I did the cars in front of me and the track,” Unzicker said. “That restart there with Ashton (Winger), he snuck by me, I just didn’t get a very good start and slipped and pushed a little bit. I knew I had a good car and I just went for it, a slide job there to take the lead and we had a good enough car to do that.”
Key notes: Unzicker led twice for 28 laps (5-24, 33-40) in capturing his fourth victory of the season and second this month — Aug. 9 at Macon (Ill.) Speedway, worth $10,000. ... Ashton Winger used a turn-three slide job to take the lead from Unzicker on a lap-25 restart before Unzicker returned the favor with his own turn-three slider on the 33rd lap. ... Points leader and reigning MARS champ Jason Feger started sixth and finished third. ... Mike Spatola led the opening four laps from the pole before giving way to Unzicker and eventually settling in fourth. ... There were three lead changes between Spatola, Unzicker and Winger. ... The race's lone caution came on lap 25 when series rookie Caden McWhorter slowed from sixth with apparent engine issues. He retired and finished 20th. ... The main event lasted 15 minutes, with 15 starters completing 40 laps. ... The MARS Labor Day weekend tripleheader continues with Saturday's $10,000-to-win stop at Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway.
On the move: Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., started ninth and finished fifth.
