Chris Simpson collected $20,000 for his weekend sweep.
What won the race: Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, capped off a clean sweep of the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway by winning Saturday's 11th annual Ron Jenkins Memorial. Simpson, who led the final 30 of 40 laps locking down the bottom-dominant 3/8-mile oval, pocketed the $12,000 payday for a $20,000 weekend with the series.
Quotable: "I knew (Daniel Adam) would get out there, the top was better. I could see that it had a pretty good cushion," Simpson said. "And I knew I had to get out there and ride, and just follow him. I was just trying to keep the car a lot of straighter than he was just so I didn't burn up the right-rear. Then I just dove to the bottom there, felt the rubber, and I was like 'oh crap.' Yeah, once you get in line there, it kind of sucks. I hate it for the fans. They did all they could. They worked hard on it."
Key notes: It’s Simpson’s second career Comp Cams Series triumph, both coming this weekend at Wheatland. … Daniel Adam paced the opening 10 laps of Saturday’s feature as he got the jump on polesitter Simpson on the initial start. Simpson wasn't pleased with the initial start, later saying in victory lane, "well, first of all, he did jump, and he shouldn't have jumped. I'm the one who starts the race." Adams eventually finished 20th as he blew out a right-rear tire running fifth on lap 37. … Terry Phillips brought out the first of two cautions when he slowed out of fourth on lap 32. … The event honored Jenkins, the original founder of Wheatland Raceway which was transformed into Lucas Oil Speedway 18 years ago. … For the second consecutive night, Mary Jenkins Holt boosted the winner’s purse by $2,000 along with a $500 fast qualifier bonus. … Simpson secured his fourth career Wheatland victory after last year’s Fall Nationals win there, worth $10,000, and last year's Jenkins Memorial triumph. … Points leader Billy Moyer padded his advantage with an 11th-place finish Saturday compared with Morgan Bagley’s 19th-place result. … Twenty-one drivers completed 40 laps. ... Hall of Famer Bill Frye won the super stock feature.
On the move: Mason Oberkramer of Broseley, Mo., started 14th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Simpson’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Larry Davidson Trucking, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Hoker Trucking, C&J Trucking, Robert Mitchell at RLM Enterprises, Factory CS Lifestyle Brand, Swift Springs, Speedwerx Performance Exhaust and Capital Race Decals.
