What won the race: Prevailing after a back-and-forth battle with Sam Seawright amid multiple slide jobs and crossover moves, second-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., led the second half of Saturday's 50-lap inaugural Casey Barrow Memorial at Screven Motor Speedway for a $10,098 payday. Whitener led the final 26 laps and beat Casey Roberts by 1.469 seconds for his first career Ultimate Southeast Series victory and eighth overall win this season.
Quotable: “I’d like to thank everybody that helps me on this thing to get up and down the road,” Whitener said. “Sam (Seawright) was real fast and he really didn’t know where to go (through lapped traffic) so that played to my factor a little bit. All in all, he raced me real clean and I tried to race him real clean. … This place is badass, we was sliding each other and running the top.”
Key notes: Whitener and Sam Seawright traded slide jobs and crossovers on laps 25-27 before Whitener pulled away. ... Seawright made wall contact a few laps later, knocking his spoiler loose and slipped to sixth on a lap-33 restart, then pulled off; he was credited with 18th after leading the opening 24 laps from the pole. ... Whitener has three Super Late Model victories in the last two months — July 10 DIRTcar Summer Nationals at Butler Motor Speedway in Qunicy, Mich. and July 25 Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series at Penton (Ala.) Raceway. ... His other five wins this season came in 604 Crates, worth more than $20,000. ... Fifth-starting Casey Roberts passed Seawright on the lap-33 restart and trailed Whitener the rest of the way. ... Seventh-starting Daulton Wilson finished third in the Big Frog-Viper Motorsports entry. ... Teenager Tucker Anderson improved seven spots for a sixth-place finish. ... Clay Harris, fresh off his first career Carolina Clash Series victory last Sunday at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C., gained 11 spots in the 50-lapper. ... The inaugural Casey Barrow Memorial paid tribute to the former Georgia Late Model racer who died in April at the age of 38. The standout driver of the No. 98 race car was a two-time Southern All Star winner, including one at Screven. ... The 29-minute race was slowed by three cautions, two for solo-spins by Chris Woods (lap 17 and 33). ... The second yellow came on a lap-17 restart attempt when fourth-running Steven Roberts spun in turn one, collecting Ross Bailes while sending Beckham Malone and Brent Robinson spinning to avoid. Bailes was allowed to retain his spot and finished eighth, while Malone (12th) and Robinson (14th) both soldiered to finishes off the lead lap; Roberts did not continue and was credited with 23rd. ... It was the tour's sixth trip to Screven and first since Chris Ferguson's 2019 victory. ... Nine starters completed 50 laps. ... Dylan Watson scratched.
On the move: Clay Harris of Jupiter, Fla., started 18th and finished seventh.
