The podium finishers at Wartburg Speedway's first Super Late Model race since 2021.
What won the race: Reclaiming the lead from Tucker Anderson on lap 21, Camaron Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led the rest of Saturday's 40-lap Southern All Star Series Super Showdown at Wartburg Speedway. The new track record holder beat Anderson, who led laps 10-20, to the finish line by 0.488 of a second for a $5,000 payday and his second career Southern All Stars triumph.
Quotable: “Actually, I was pretty good in lapped traffic. That’s where I got (Anderson) back at. I just goofed up and got protecting that bottom a little too much and let him drive by me (earlier),” Marlar said. “I’m glad to be here. Like, we haven’t raced here in four or five years. Honestly, y’all have one of the best racetracks. I don't know why we don’t race here no more than we do.”
Key notes: Marlar, who began the night by lowering Wartburg’s track record in time trials, paced the feature’s first nine laps before yielding to Tucker Anderson. Marlar fought back to move ahead just after the halfway mark and survived three caution flags over the next two laps en route to his first SAS victory since April 23, 2022, at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn. ... Marlar secured his second overall feature win this season, adding to July 4's Southern Thunder Series triumph at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway. ... Lapped traffic allowed Anderson to reduce Marlar's advantage in the closing laps. ... Kendall Franklin turned back challenges from Mike Weeks in the final stages to finish third. … The burst of three mid-race cautions included a spin by Will Hicks on lap 22 followed by lap-23 slowdowns for Kaede Loudy’s flat tire and a multicar restart tangle that included Anthony White, Ronnie Johnson, Evan Harrell and Michael Luna. … The feature, Wartburg’s first Super Late Model race since 2021, lasted 36 minutes, with 11 starters completing 40 laps. ... Glenn Vanover scratched.
On the move: Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., started 17th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Greg and Lisa Curl-owned Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Curl Properties, B&R Construction, Marlar Auto Mart, Mac Metal Sales & Trusses, Extreme Flooring, Wayne Bowen, Platinum Designs, XS Power and Bilstein Shocks.
Points chase: After Wartburg: 1. Ronnie Johnson (3,000); 2. Michael Luna (2,781); 3. Billy Franklin (2,754); 4. Kendall Franklin (2,650); 5. Dillon Tidmore (2,205).
