Josh Zimpel led all 40 laps Wednesday at I-94 EMR Speedway.
What won the race: Leading all the way from outside the front row, Josh Zimpel of Braham, Minn., captured Wednesday's Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series finale at I-94 Speedway. Zimpel, who turned back multiple challenges from polesitter Tyler Peterson, earned $3,000 in a race that was part of the WISSOTA 100 week. Fifth-finishing Dave Mass secured his first WISSOTA Challenge title.
Quotable: "I knew I kind of had to get to the lead because I knew Tyler (Peterson) was so tough to get around," Zimpel said. "Since then I was looking up at my guys and I couldn't ever tell them if they were telling me to do something different, so I was just going kind as hard as I could for 40 laps."
Key notes: The evening's program was marred by serious injuries suffered by a track official aboard a four-wheeler who was struck by a street stock on the track at a conclusion of a heat race. He was taken to a local hospital and the program had a delay of more than two hours. ... The Late Model feature concluded just before 1 a.m. and because of the late hour, WISSOTA Challenge postseason ceremonies for champion Dave Mass were shifted to Saturday. ... Winner Josh Zimpel's previous WISSOTA Challenge victory came July 19 at Ogilvie (Minn.) Radceway. ... Six cautions slowed the action, including one on the first lap for a slowing Chad Becker, who retired. ... On the 13th lap, Sammy Mars slowed with a flat right-rear tire (Johnny Broking's car pulled up lame during the caution period). ... On the lap-13 restart, several drivers were bottled up exiting turn four. ... A lap-29 yellow flag appeared for frontstretch debris, then a lap later Mars, Danny Vang and Cory Tammen went around in turn four (Mars gestured complaints to Jeff Provinzino when the No. 28 rolled past under caution). ... The sixth and final caution dropped on lap 32 when Dan Ebert went around. ... Wednesday’s top-eight finishers earned guaranteed starting spots for Saturday’s 50-lap WISSOTA 100.
On the move: Jordan Tollakson of Montevideo, Minn., started 24th and finished eighth.
