Cody Mahoney celebrates his first career Iron-Man Series victory.
What won the race: Leading all 40 laps from the pole, Cody Mahoney of Madison, Ind., earned a dominant $7,500 payday in Friday's Coal Miners Classic at Hidden Hollow Speedway for his first career Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series victory. Mahoney beat Rusty Schlenk to the line by 0.653 of a second for his second feature victory this season and first special event triumph in more than nine years.
Key notes: Mahoney added to his June 27 win in local Super Late Models at Ohio's Moler Raceway Park. ... It's his first special event since July 23, 2016, an Ultimate Heart of America Series visit to Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky., worth $3,000. ... Fifth-starting Rusty Schlenk and R.J. Conley traded the runner-up spot five times with Schlenk taking the spot for good on lap 25 and trailing Mahoney the rest of the way, but never truly challenged for the lead. ... Conley slipped to sixth at the checkers. ... Sixth-starting Colten Burdette, Schlenk's closest contender in the Iron-Man standings, took third from Conley on lap 26 before rounding out the podium finishers. ... Fourth-finishing McKay Wenger made a rare Iron-Man Series start. ... Seth Daniels rebounded to finish 10th after slowing from fifth to draw the race's first caution on lap 16. ... James Williamson appeared to draw the second stoppage on lap 22 before retiring. ... Shannon Thornsberry pulled off under the lap-22 caution. ... The third and final yellow flag flew on lap 30. ... Friday's feature, the first major Late Model event at Hidden Hollow since Aug. 1, 2014, lasted 21 minutes with 13 starters completing 40 laps. ...
