Jason Feger celebrates his $10,000 victory Saturday at Davenport.
What won the race: Coming alive on a restart with six circuits remaining, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., surged forward from third to overtake Chris Simpson for the lead on the 36th lap en route to winning Saturday night’s 40-lap Corn State Nationals finale at Davenport Speedway. Feger turned back Simpson’s bids to regain command in the final laps to beat the Iowa driver by 1.259 seconds for a $10,000 victory that gave him a sweep of the quarter-mile oval’s MARS Late Model Championship Series doubleheader.
Key notes: Feger was wallowing in sixth place — the position he started the race — on lap 30 when a caution flag flew for Ryan Unzicker, who slowed on the backstretch with a flat right-rear tire moments after assuming command from race-long pacesetter Blair Nothdurft. He shot to third on the restart and was still there on lap 34 when Jake Little slowed for a caution flag just as Simpson had grabbed the top spot from Nothdurft. … Taking the final restart from the outside of Nothdurft in the Delaware double-file formation, Feger rode the top to immediately pass Nothdurft and slid Simpson off turn two to seize control for good on lap 36. ... Feger registered his third straight and eighth victory of the season on the MARS tour. The winner of Friday's $5,000 weekend opener scored his 35th career win in series action, tying him with Bill Frye for second on the circuit’s all-time win list. … Simpson settled for second after leading laps 34-35. … Frank Heckenast Jr. slipped past Nothdurft for third on lap 37 and finished there. … Nothdurft led laps 1-29 and 31-33 before slipping to fourth in the finishing order. ... Garrett Alberson, who swept last year’s Corn State Nationals, started from the pole position but never led a lap and finished fifth. … Six caution flags slowed the feature, all for single cars falling off the pace with problems. In addition to the yellows for Unzicker and Little, cautions were needed for Derrick Stewart (lap four); Justin Duty (flat tire on lap six); Nick Anvelink (lap 12); and Daryn Klein (lap 32). … The first B-main was halted for an opening-lap tangle in turn two that saw Daniel Adam’s car sandwiched between Mike Mataragas and Mark Voigt. No injuries were reported.
On the move: Michael Leach of Sun River, Mont., started 17th and finished ninth.
